Elvera Marie Gallettini Bakstran- August 24, 1920 - August 25, 2016 The youngest of six children, Vera was born in Savannah to Captain Joseph and Lucia (Salesi) Gallettini. In 1938, she graduated from St. Vincent's Academy and began Nurse's Training at St. Joseph's School of Nursing in Savannah. She completed her RN at St. Joseph's in Atlanta, Ga where she met her husband Charlie. They were married in the chapel at the Cathedral of St. John the Baptist in 1943, beginning her life as an Air Force Wife. While Charlie served in WWII and the Korean War, Vera raised their three children and worked full time at St. Joseph's Hospital. She retired from Memorial Medical Center in 1978.
Through passing, she joins her parents, her two brothers (Dominic and Johnny), and two of her sisters (Rose Marie Fisher and Mary Swords.) Vera reunites with her husband Charles Bakstran, Sr. and their sons, Charlie, Jr. and Billy. Vera is survived by her daughter Mary Ann Loncon (Larry, d. 2009), her sister Frances Gallettini Palmer (age 99), and two daughters-in-law, Betsy Bakstran (Massachusetts) and Judy Bakstran Lyle (Florida.). She has five grandchildren, Michael (Leslie) Loncon, Michelle Loncon (Ken Dawkins), Jennifer (Bill Milinazzo), Ken (Shauna) Bakstran, and Erick (Tovah) Bakstran and 9 great-grandchildren.
A Funeral Mass will be offered at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, August 30th at St. Peter the Apostle Catholic Church on Wilmington Island. Burial will be in Forest Lawn Memory Gardens. The family will receive friends and loved ones at the Church from 9:30 - 10:30 prior to the service.
Vera spent her final years in the tender care of the staffs at Savannah Square Nursing Center and her final months at Hospice Savannah. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to Hospice Savannah at P.O. Box 13190, Savannah, GA 31416.
